Hi, all.
If I format and create a document in WordPad and save it with the default setting .RTF, the document always saves as a "Word" file and not a "WordPad" file. If I rename the extension from .RTF to .txt it will open with WordPad with no loss of formatting. What am I doing wrong?

The RTF format is also used by MS Word. They just change the extension to ".DOC" instead but it's the sameo sameo.

If you want to change, try going into the file extension assignments and Wordpad the prime program. BUT, you might create a problem with MS Word coming up with their stuff -- not sure. I don't have a problem with MW Word poppin' up instead of Wordpad.

It all depends on what application is the default application for opening RTF files. On my computer it is WordPerfect.

Once Word is installed it becomes the default application. If you really want it to be WordPad load up Windows Explorer.

Go to Tools > Options > File Types. Scroll down till you come to RTF. Highlight it and click change. You can then highlight WordPad and it will then become the default application for RTF Files.

You could also make WordPad the default application for .DOC files as well if you wish but that would casue problem with Word if you have it installed.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Stuart.

You've solved my problem. Many thanks.
I do have Word installed, so I'll leave it as the default for .doc files.
