i am trying to create a mail merge document that pulls from a .csv file. it will have a home and business address side by side. i need it to slide up if the field is blank. like if it goes street1, street2, street 3, cityline ... if someone doesn't have street2 or street 3 i need cityline to slide up right under street1 ... does this make sense? I can't use the "address wizard" thing as it won't support 2 addresses side by side.

You are going to have to redesign your .csv file. In any database, one line = one record. You cannot have data for two different records on one line.
If you must have two addresses side by side you are going to have to write everything yourself, re-inventing the wheel in effect all for the sake of a badly designed data file.
