We had a ppower failure. One computer let me restart in normal mode by pressing enter. The other computer, laptop, shows the same screen, but will not start when I press enter. Actually, that instruct does not show up on the lapstops screen like it did on the other computer, but it does have all the modes. What does happen is there is this whole list of comfig/syst and etc that shows up if I press enter in any mode.

Sometimes a power failure will cause massive damage to the magnetic surface of the hard drive and cause a complete in ability to use the existing operating system and sometimes the drive as well.
Your best option is to remove the laptops harddrive and slave it to the other computer so as to copy what files you must save.
Once that is done then reinstall the harddrive and use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility program to check and if possible repair the drive before you attempt to re-install the operating system.
