Today, I was adding a bigger drive to my file server. Strangely, the file server wouldn't even start the Windows Setup with the new drive. But my other computer detected the drive just fine. So I decided to do Part 1 of the Windows XP setup program (the MS-DOS part) on my main computer, and then do Part 2 of the install (the graphical part) on the file server.

Here's where I am now: I've successfully finished Part 1 of the Windows XP setup program. Now that Part 1's finished, the file server finally recognizes the drive, and will boot and continue Setup from where the other computer left off.

But now, my main computer fails to boot! It gives me a message that "Windows couldn't start because the target boot path wasn't found." But I didn't even touch the existing hard drive when I was preparing the server's new drive, so I don't know how this can be! I need help, please!

My Super P3:

2 gigs of PC2100 RAM
QDI Advance 12 mobo, this baby rocks!

jackbomb, when you installed the new drive, giving you a total of 2, did you designate a master and a slave via jumper? If not, your machine's confused.

I bet you forgot to put your bios back to booting the first drive and not the second that you removed.

Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things

I didn't change any BIOS settings; I just temporarily hooked the new drive to the DVD burner's cable.

I can tell that it's reading off the original drive, as it uses the term "Microsoft Windows" instead of a more generic term such as "Operating System". But it just won't boot.

Would first check the BOOT.INI file or rebuild it.
