My boyfriend just tried installing a new 200gb seagate hd into our computer(he built the computer himself). Now when we try to boot it up it says "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". We dont have a system disk for it and and it wont boot from our laptop (dell) system disk.

"Installed a new hdd in a self built computer" "It won't boot from the Dell system disk" You will have to buy an XP disk to load the operating system.

enter setup bios first while is booting and change wher it says first boot. Follow screen details so you could modify the boot to CDROM.Choose the operating system after this and install it by pressing Enter.Good Luck.

First you got to format the drive. Then install a OS if 98/Me you need to fdisk then format. If 2000 or above boot to the CD and follow the directions.

If it was previously booting, adding a secondry drive should not stop it from booting unless the new drive was placed as master on the cable. Recheck the master/slave jumpers on both drives and make sure the old drive is master position on the cable. Don't use cable select, use master/slave.
