WMV playing failure.
I use WinXP Professional OS and Netscape browser 4.7.
I do not have Realplayer installed.
And yes, I did try upgrading the player and also downloaded the latest codec from Microshaft.I down load a WMV file to my hard drive, when I try and play the file in Windows Media Player I always get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because it is either damaged or corrupt."
I have done countless WMV troubleshooting searches with Ask Jeeves, Lycosmart, Google, etc.
I got nowhere.
It's suprising how many people will discuss the problem on their page but offer absolutely no solutions. One result from my searches gave me an answer; it was the best answer, therorectically.
It read:In the Preferences (Netscape) Options. The "Applications" section should include a MIME type for the .WMV file extension. If it does not, add a new one with the following information:
Description: Windows Media WMV
Extension: wmv
MIME Type: video/x-ms-wmv
Application: choose your Windows Media PlayerSounds good doesn't it? Unfortunately it didn't work.
Does anyone have another solution?
Please don't respond to this with something unconstructive and irrelevant.
Myself and others don't want to hear about your new haircut, the color of your front door or what happened at the proctologist 3 weeks ago.

Did you try downloading the file a second time? Can you get a friend to download it?
Could be that the file did corrupt (CRC) during transit. Packets do get lost/screwed.
I'll be honest and admit that I do not mess with video files much. I have come across this problem in the past and re-downloading solved it. I am not suggesting this is the only course of action, but it may be worth investigating.
If the file is huge or your source has gone south, I couldn't suggest anything to fix it. I suppose this is the point where the flame begins about my response being "unconstructive and irrelevant."
I thought I'd offer a suggestion if no one else did. Good luck.
