.wmv files causes WMP9 to crash. Both those on my HD and when streaming them. All other formats play OK!

Well I installed WMP10 and the problem still persists. I get an "an error has occured and WMP will now shut down" message.

.wmv files play OK on all my other players: zoomplayer and bsplayer.

What's your opinion?

Can't be, I tried like 5 different files, on and off the Internet.

Crashed WMP, ran well on all other players.

One last thought. Uninstall both wmp's and reinstall only one.

Don't worry - you don't have to read the whole thread :) - just start at response #100 and follow my instructions to delete the index.dat files.

Deleting the index.dat file did not prevent WMP9 or WMP10 from crashing when playing OR streaming windows media files. Why would it?

This is SO stupid! M$ WMP can't play windows media files but all other players can.

F*** it! F*** M$!

The index.dat file holds info about everything you download, and WMP is the only player that will check the index.dat file to look for URL-info.

If you're getting an error message, then check the error-code against the listed ones in here:

Maybe a CODEC problem?
WMP Menu>Tools>Options>Player tab>
"Download CODECs automatically" <YES

NOTE: Don't install random CODEC packs (which are abundant on the web) because they will often cause more trouble.

You can try a program called G-Spot to find out which Codec is needed, but I don't know how good it works with .wmv files:

I'm familiar with Gspot, I run it all the time and I don't install codec packs, only single codecs when I need them.

Even if I'd enable download codecs automatically that should not be a cause for WMP to crash, should it?

Thanks anyways!

Crash not needed??? Welcome to Microsoft Products !:)

Because the problem seems to be with just one format, I'd go with CODEC as a cause, but it's quite possible that this is related to your InternetOptions settings somehow.

Try clearing the SSL state(content page) and enable SSL 2.0 / SSL 3.0 / TLS 1.0 in the options on the 'advanced' page.

Also, if you're using the 'open URL' to open these movies, and the URL has an embedded UserName+Password (like: http://Username:Password@www.website.com), then know that this type of embedded U+P was discontinued/disabled via a WindowsUpdate by Microsoft. You can still re-enable that through a registry-change, but I don't have a link for that.

You can also punch in the URL without the U+P and it will ask for the U+P when it tries to open the URL.
