Comment:

Anyone know if a .wmv file format is suitable to burn to a DVD in order for the DVD to play in a normal player?

Thanks

Hi, you'll need to get a piece of software to transcode the .wmv file into something that the DVD player will recognise....

If you already have this then yes, you can transcode a .wmv file, I've done it several times, although mainly use .avi or .mpeg..... something like Nero 6 or 7 Ultra Edition will do the trick fine.

Nero 7 Ultra is available as a free download if you haven't already got it!!!

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then basically you cannot put any PC video format directly onto a DVD then expect it to work... its like me trying to read Japanese... its not going to happen.

As it stands, the PC can read the file, but the DVD player cannot, this is why you need to transcode the file from PC format into something that DVD players can read... it takes time, but once you've done it once and have a master copy, you can simply copy off of the master.

Sorry if you knew this already and hope it was of somehelp if you didn't know it.

Hi again, no.

The DVD player will only recognise files that have been transcoded (basically means 'translated') into a format that they can read.

They are unable to read .avi and .mpeg files straight off of your PC.

Example:

If you burn a 1GB .avi file onto a DVD-R and then put that into any DVD player, it will NOT recognise the disk....

If you put the 1GB file through i.e. Nero 7 (need to download Nero Vision Express - an add on pack) then it takes the raw .avi file and changes it into a file that 99% of DVD players can read, which I 'think' are .VOB, .AOB, and .VRO files - I'm a little rusty in this area of the actual file types but I think they about right.

Once the software has changed the original .avi file into a DVD file, you'll also notice that the original 1GB file is now more like 2GB or even more, depending on the way its been transcoded.

http://smartdvdcreator.com/ - this is something that'll do the job, there's lots out there and there is freeware programs which you can download and use for free as well, you just need to look (Google) for them.

Hope this is of some help again... gotta shoot off now...
