Hi everyone,
I hope that you can help me with this annoying problem. Last night I installed DSL on my pc. The first thing that happened when it came on was that it opened a porn site. I ran virus scan and it came up with 3 that it deleted. I ran ad-aware and spybot. Well, today when I turned on pc I got this message:
c:/windows/system32/services/wmplayer.exe is not found. I downloaded wm9 from microsoft, but I still get that message. Can any of you smart people help me out. PLEASE.
Tanja

Make sure that the shortcut you're using is pointing to the correct file location.

Hi TanjaB,
One of my experience that the c:\searchpage virus was also disable your WMPLayer.

If you have had the c:\searchpage and cleaned it up already, you need to re-install WMP.

Go Windows Explorer -> C: -> Program Files -> Window Media Player -> and double click on SETUP_WM.exe

That will re-install WMP (at least in my case).

Good luck.

Hi z28,
I tried what you said - re-installed WMP the way you said, but the message still comes at start up.
C:/windows/system32/services/wmplayer.exe not found. Make sure that wmplayer.exe exists or remove from reg.
I don't know what to do, because I simply don't know a whole lot about computers.

Check AdAware and/or SpyBot: they typically try to disable WMPlayer's "phone home" usage reporting capability. I prefer to turn that off in WMPlayer itself; it's under Tools...Options...Privacy.

Uninstall WMPlayer using the Control Panel's add/remove programs feature (to remove any "hotfixes") and then the tab add/remove windows components to remove the existing Media Player. Then reinstall from a fresh download. Don't use the old copy; it may be corrupted.

try this steps.

click start, click run, type in msconfig.
for windows xp click the startup tab. click disable all button (this will just disable all the startup programs tomake the computer a bit faster.) click ok. click restart.

if the message disappeared by disabling them try to update your player (windows media player). if not try downloading a spyware remover.

for windows 98 and me

click start and run, type in msconfig. click the startup tab and uncheck everything except for the ff.

scan registry
state mgr
task monitor
pc health( for me)
load power profile (2 of these are shown and put them both checks)

The file the error refers to is not the legit Windows Media Player, it's spyware. There is no "services" folder under System32. The spyware removal program correctly removed the spyware, but did not clean up the startup entries for it.

Go into MSCONFIG as outlined above and remove any entries for "xpsystem" (there will be at least three - one in Run, one in RunServices, and one in WIN.INI
