WMP Files Changed to MPG Files???

For whatever reason I went to play a video file which are WMP(Windows Media Player) files and although it has the WMP icon, when I click on it to play, it states that Windows cannot open this file and and wants me to either use the web service to find the appropriate program or select the program from a list; has anyone else experienced this situation, as it is very strange as these files are on another drive and the only thing that I installed recently was FireFox although was able to play the WMP files normally until recently?

What makes you think they have changed extensions? Or is that just your assumption since they aren't playing? Sounds like a Codecs problem. Did you recently install or uninstall any software or patches? I would start by running System Restore to a date before this happened.

Because the type of file listed now is an MPG file instead of Windows Media and it doesn't simply play as a Windows Media File as it once did and as I mentioned it states that Windows cannot open the file and suggests searching for the appropriate program or selecting it from a list that is why, what do you suggest in order to resolve this?

There is no WMF extension. Look at the link below to see what different Windows Media File Extensions there are.

If they used to be WMV, try changing the extension of one of the files from MPG to WMV and see if it plays.

You didn't answer my question. Did you recently install or uninstall any software? As I suggested in Response 1, try a System Restore.

Actually, your question was answered in my first post as I said that I had installed FireFox.

Right, but you weren't specific. "I installed recently was FireFox although was able to play the WMP files normally until recently?" You didn't say if the two events coincided. Regardless, my first suggestion stands. Try a System Restore.

Specific enough to establish the fact that I did in fact recently install FireFox which could have altered something, however I do not know if the events coincide, as I have know way of knowing that at present which is why I asked.

Open WMP go to tools button on top. click tools, click options, click the files type tab and see if the file type is checked or unchecked. Put a check mark in the empty boxes then reboot.

See if this returns the proper extension to those files.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Okay, that worked although now they are MPEG files and as before the thumbnail picture of whats on the video has been replaced by the 4 color Windows Media Player icon?

No, as it seems to be a resource hog and doesn't always fix the problem either from what I have experienced and I normally just reformat if things get that bad, although I could just convert each MPEG file to a WMV file which is a little time consuming with a converter such as WinFF and Windows Media Encoder which work well, however I didn't think that I would have to use them. Maybe they always were MPEG files although I certainly don't remember that being the case and now I cant see the thumbnail picture when the folder view is set to thumbnail, as it just shows the Windows icon symbol instead, does anyone know how to re-enable the thumbnail view perhaps?

You may have installed a program that took possession of those files. When installing you need to read the screens. Some are very intrusive.

System Restore is not a resource hog if you use it corectly. You can either remove the restore points periodically of set the percentage for less.

In this case it probably would have worked. Reformatting is alot of work. Try imaging your boot partition. Also use multiple partitions.

No, I actually take the time unlike most and see what changes are being made when programs are installed and yes they can be quite intrusive and like I said the only recent install was FireFox. I am quite familiar with using system restore correctly, just prefer to reformat to avoid any other problems although I always use a ghost image program as well which really makes it very easy.
