but...... this wireless router does not say that u need a specific model of laptop soo surely it works for any, with either the usb adapter or pcmcia wifi card.

katie,
Ham30 is right in that when asking questions about certain products that would/should work with computers....that it is always best to mention the model and name of the computer.

In this case you are asking what would be better for your networking on a wireless router set up...either pcmcia or usb?

Normally I would sugest that usb would be better of the two simply because it is more universal and can actually be used with desktops and workstations. The issue would be
that the usb would be the better choice if you have a 2.0 USB port or a 1.0 USB port. AS the 2.0 would be a hundred percent faster for the connection.

The PCMCIA slot would be the more obvious choice in the USB 1.0 is used on your laptop, as it would be the fastest connection, although the card could only be used for the laptop and not utillized by other computers...

As we are talking primarily for your laptop then the best choice is to choose which ever would give you the better connection. Now you will have to decide which is best given these choices.

Unless I missed something, I'm missing something. Do you have a desktop hardwired for an Internet connection? And you want to use your existing connection for your new laptop (the brand name of which you don't know)?

Or, will the new laptop be your only computer? If it is, then you only need to run an ehternet cable from your DSL or cable connection in the wall. If you're DialUp (God forbid), then it's your phone connection. (Well, so's your DSL.)

But, if it's the former, get yourelf a router, and either plug the laptop into the router with an ethernet cord, OR, get a PCMCIA wifi card, and plug it into the laptop, and you're all set (as long as you don't move across town).

You do know that if you have a router, then your cabling is different from operating with just the modem.

The card will also give you greater mobility as you travel with the number of hot spots increasing every day.

Is all this perfectly clear?
