Hello,

I will ask this first in the XP forum as I think it may have something to do with the OS...

I just installed a LinkSys Wireless B pci card on my Windows XP home edition.

I found my router on the network and see it in XP's list of available networks.

I setup the WEP encryption and have established a connection. I can browse internet pages fine however, when I look in the system tray, the wireless card shows as being disconnected.

Has anyone experience this? The only other software running from an Anti Virus / Firewall perspective is a trial version of Mcafee that came with the computer in which I'm thinking about uninstalling.

Any suggestions / advice is greatly appreciated.

ae you using the windows wireless network manager or is your connection controlled by some 3rd party (linksys) software?

I can't help with why this happens, but I can tell you it has happened to me more than once on many different computers. Then after the computer is restarted or reconnected it shows connected. So I really wouldn't worry about it unless you have noticable problems.

if you don't need windows polling for wireless networks every 2 minutes, disable the wireless zero service. you can stop/disable this service from your windows service menu or using this handy tool (no installation required):

wireless zero shutdown

http://download.elligs.net/wzs123.exe

if you're always on the same wireless network, you can leave this service disabled.

and if you have no intention to make use of mcafee once the trial period has expired, uninstall it (AVG free and comodo firewall - also free - have proven to be reliable combo)

Thanks guys, for your reply.

With some reseting / reconfig on the router, and a cold boot on the PC, it seems to be working fine.

Thanks.
