I wonder
At a place that provided Wireless Internet, I have seen a Tech person using his laptop and a special program. The program picked up other Wireless Routers, and the Channel they were operating on.

The object being maybe not to use the same "Channel" that other Routers may be using. ???

Chuck -

I believe the special program you've seen the Tech person run from his laptop may be the same type I use to detect available access points - Netstumbler.

http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

There is no way anyone can detect routers that do not have Access Point enabled.

Hello NYC --
That may be cool, but I wonder why my Laptop, wireless Adaptor, and XP would not show any available networks to connect to.

Yet the Tech Persons showed 5 or 6 networks in the area. Any thoughts ???

All I can guess is that the tech picks up rogue access points that may have been filtered or blocked from yours for good reasons.

If you want a program that will do that and also secure your laptop while using wireless away from home I would suggest that you look at Jiwire hotspot helper. It is not free, but it is well worth the 30.00 or so. I have used it for about three years and even use it at home on occasion also.

I've seen this problem with a friend's PC. Windows XP and the software that run the wireless adapter were conflicting with each other. You have to let one or the other handle the wireless connection. Remove the wireless adapter software - just load the drivers. Then XP will handle it and there will no longer be contention.
