Hello, just wondering if someone can help me !
I've just set up a wireless conection for my laptop (with built in wireless). It work fine, 54g conection, but every now and again I get another connection listed in my Choose A Wireless Conection box.
It says " a (then a picture of two laptops) unsecured computer-to-computer network.
Other times it not there, just my connection for my router
Can someone help ?
Thanks

This could be one of 2 things. Either your laptop is picking up another wireless access point or your picking up someone elses computer!!! In which case if you can see them then they can see you! Enable WEP just to be sure. do you have SP2 installed? The wireless configuration utilty in SP2 is better than SP1. But if your machine runs ok then dont install SP2 LOL. Your machine will automatically search for other wireless devices unless you change the setting and tell it not to, it will also automatically connect to other machines or access points if they are not secure unless you change it. HTH

Looks like you are picking up someone else's Wireless network.
Just make sure yours is secured or they could be picking up yours.

Am i right in presuming you have a wireless router as well! If you have then are you accessing the internet through it cos i could drive by your house with my laptop and browse the web through your connection, so could anyone else! Enable WEP asap.

Ok Thank to you all.
Can I ask what is what WEP is ?How do I stop my laptop searching for other connection and connecting to other connections automatically ?
How do I make it secure ?
I'm running SP2 on both Laptop and Desktop
Thanks

WEP: Short for Wired Equivalent Privacy, a security protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs) defined in the 802.11b standard.(now also 802.11g and SUPER G) WEP is designed to provide the same level of security as that of a wired LAN. LANs are inherently more secure than WLANs because LANs are somewhat protected by the physicalities of their structure, having some or all part of the network inside a building that can be protected from unauthorized access. WLANs, which are over radio waves, do not have the same physical structure and therefore are more vulnerable to tampering. WEP aims to provide security by encrypting data over radio waves so that it is protected as it is transmitted from one end point to another.
Post your router brand/model and someone will advise where to enable WEP(encryption) and the password protocol you need to enable it.

The best bet for that is to go to your router's manufacturer. They will give you step by step installation proceedures to access your router so as to turn on wep.
