I want to format my Sony VAIO. The problem is that it didn't come with a windows XP disk. The sofware was already installed along with a TON of other useless crap that I don't want to reinstall. Is there any way that I can wipe the computer clean and just put windows back on but not the other factory BS? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

ok one question do you have a copy of windows? your computer may beable tp make recovery disk but they will reinstall all the stuff you dont want. so go out find and windows 98 bootdisk when it loads up and says C:\ type FORMAT C:\ and there you go(only do this if you have a copy of windows)

With no XP disk you are out of luck. If it came with a restore program or a restore CD you can get it to like it was when you got it and then delete what you don't want.
If you don't have the capacity to do a restore with what was sent, or a restore partition, or it is damaged, etc., you are basically SOL. Sorry, but Sony will....
oh never mind.

You probably have the restoration discs for the sony? If so, just do a reinstall and then uninstall all the other junk that loads up by those discs.
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

First, ask Sony if you can get a full version of XP. I have heard of some people having luck with this approach - but I believe your chances are slim.
If that doesn't work try installing from a full copy of XP using the installation code that should be included with your Sony. Borrow one if you can.
If you installation code for your Sony won't work with the full version of XP, or if you cannot get your hands on one, then go ahead and do a restore with the Sony disks. Then remove all the crap you dont want. Once you have it how you like, go ahead and create a custom restore image of your OS using a ghosting app. I use Ghost, but there are free alternatives.

dont just be too ready to move all that stuff find and unistall program if you just delete it it could cause problems if any of the stuff is in your registry

if your OS is XP home sp2 and you don't have the cd, get a disc of a friend and use the license key that came with your sony vayo (maybe on a sticker), nothing illegal about that and it works ... provided the cd is matching your OS.
and as for response no. 1 ... start from a win98 and run format c: ... would be nice to see how you do this on a ntfs disc :-)

i forgot ... before re-install your OS, go to the manufacturer's website and download all necessary drivers for your model(nic, audio, video, modem, etc.) and burn 'em on a cd ... saves u a lot of hassle

Look do not do anything until you can find out from Sony how to do a reinstall.
If you did not recieve any disk then chances are you have hidden partition on which you installation information is on.
You need to go to the Sony website or get what ever manuals you got with your computer and look through it to find out how to do a reinstall. If you use something like Killdisk you may be in real trouble, if you wipe out your recovery partition.
See what you can first find out from Sony website or the manuals, then post back here with the information.
