I just built a new system with all new components...Asus A7V133-C mobo, XP1800+, 512mb PC133, WDC 60GB 7200rpm HDD, etc.
I tried installing WinXP Pro but the installation hangs at the 33 min mark. I've changed the BIOS settings to setup defaults, but that didn't help...I removed one stick of RAM & tried the installation again with just 256mb, but it still hangs up at the same point. So I popped in the WinME boot disk, FDISKED, partitioned in FAT32 & installed WinME/drivers/software without any probs. Once WinME was up & running, I popped in the XP disk to setup a parallel install, but once again, the installation stalled at the 33 min mark. I thought there may be a prob with the WinXP Pro CD (though I used it on my other system without any probs), so I tried installing WinXP Home...same thing...installation stops at the 33 min mark.
What is going on here?

What is it doing at 33 min?
use FAT 32 partitions, and after it stopped working, restart the system with a dos floppy disk. Then go to c:\windowsThere you can find one or all of the following files ... (if you have problem understanding them, copy paste the last 20 lines of them back here)
setup.act.log
setupapi.log
setuperr.log
setuplog.txtHope this helps,

I saw this problem before. Are you using XP with SP1 built in and USB mouse or keyboard?
If that is the case, then just restart the computer after it stops at 33 min and it will continue the rest of the installation. Or just install the XP without USB mouse or keyboard attached. Good Luck.

did you pull out all the cards?
sound nic and so on?
just leave the video card see what happens?
if still the same thing i say is the motherboard.
oh another thing check the jumpers on your hd.
AND PLEASEEEEEEEEEE LET US KNOW HOW YOU FIX YOUR PROBLEM.
cheers

Thanks for the suggestions...I haven't tried it with just the video card alone...I'll pull the sound & modem cards & give that a try next.
As for how long I've waited...well, I went thru the setup to the point where I had to set the clock to the proper time zone, then assign a computer name...I clicked NEXT, then walked away...I came back about 30 min later & it was stalled at the 33 min mark...there was no hard drive/CD-ROM activity. So I rebooted & had to go thru the steps again (re-enter the ID number, set the time zone, assign a computer name) & clicked NEXT...once again, it stalled at the 33 min mark. I tried this several times with the same results every time. But WinME installed without a hitch & runs great...no probs whatsoever!
I have no USB devices (i.e. mouse or keyboard) connected & I have SP1 on a separate CD...it's not "built-in".

Hi,
Try this:
Reduce your bus speed to 100 MHz and leave your system UNDERclocked.
This sounds like a ram problem. XP is very picky about memory errors.
Good luck,
stootze

stootze,
That's exactly what I did. I tried removing the cards, but that didn't help. I tried playing with the BIOS settings...still no luck. I tried using different RAM...that didn't help either. Finally, I set the FSB to 100 mhz & the installation completed!
I'm gonna keep it at 100 mhz FSB until I complete ALL the software installations. Now my question is....what's gonna happen when I try setting my FSB back to 133mhz where it belongs? Will it run or am I gonna encounter errors, lockups, crashes?? Do I have to buy higher quality RAM?? I have a few sticks of Kingston ValueRAM that have always worked for me...until XP, that is.
Thanks.

Hello,
Glad you got it to install. Yes, I would bet that if you put the bus back to 133 it will crash.
I was reading your machine specs and I have almost the indentical machine...including the lock up problem if i set the bus to 133.
I think it is the motherboard (i have your exact board); i've replaced everything else and it still won't run at 133.
Get the machine set up the way you want it and then set the bus to 133.
Crashes? Set it to 130 and increase your multiplier to make up for the difference.
Keep doing this until you find a bus speed that it will run at. I know this sucks, but i have no other answer. The performance hit is pretty small, so i've let it go at that.
My machine runs just fine at 125.
I have a RAM testing program that will stress your RAM and report any errors. Shoot me an email and i will send a copy of it back with instructions (igetjunk@mail.com)
Good luck,
Stootze

Stootze,
Thanks for the tips. I'll email ya when I get home...I'm at work right now ;)
Have you tried the latest BIOS? My board came with the latest "official" BIOS...version 1009 (2002/05/02). But I checked the Asus website & there's a recent beta BIOS listed...version 1010.01b (2003/02/12)...but it doesn't list what it updates or fixes. It just says "The latest Beta BIOS". I'm gonna give it a shot....
