Well, I've noticed that some of my SysTray icons no longer show up. Yahoo Messenger is one of them, the volume icon and the network status icons also don't show up. ZoneAlarm Pro and Trend's OfficeScanNT icons however do show up. Now, I did check the properties of the task bar the "Hide inactive icons" option is NOT checked. I tried toggling it a few times but that didn't seem to solve the problem. I also verified that the programs in question don't have any similar "hide SysTray" options enabled. I am able to get the volume icon to show up only if I load the Sounds control panel and toggle the "Place volume icon in task bar" button, and then it shows up, but dissapears when I reboot!
Is there something I should check that could be causing this? Is there a service that may have been accidently shut down? A registry setting? I keep my system up to date with service packs and updates, I'm really baffled as to what could cause this kind of behaviour. Anyone ever here of such a thing? Any suggestions would be great appreciated. Thanks.

Only thing found at M$ about missing icons:
Icons in the Notification Area May Disappear If You Use High-Contrast Color Themes in Windows XP

Thanks for the response, but I'm afraid it has nothing to do with high-contrast themes. I'm just using the standard ones right now.
The only thing I've found to fix the problem is to log-off and the log back in. My systray seems to work the second time around. But if I reboot I'm to the same old problem! Talk about lame!

I've got the same problem!!! Can't find an answer anywhere. Let me know if you find a solution and I'll do the same.
