Subject: WinXP Suddenly Shutdown & RestartOS: Windows XPCPU/Ram: P4 2400/512 |
Comment: My computer suddenly shutdown and restart or sometimes the screen just went blank and I can't restart or do anything beside turn off the power for a minute and turn back on. I've sent error report many time but Microsoft said that it's because of my device driver and they can't tell what exactly caused this problem. I didn't install any software or hardware lately, so I can't tell which device driver is incompatible. I just happened for last couple day, otherwise it has been working great. I use WinXP Home SP1, P4 2.4Ghz 512mb PC2100 DDR, Radoeon 9000.

Reply: (edit)First you need to get the machine to stop restarting on errors so that you can get a BSOD and error message. Without these messages and/or info from your event viewer, it is nearly impossible for anyone to troubleshoot. First, please go to system properties > Advanced tab > under startup and recovery click settings > under System failure make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked AND that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked. Click "OK" and reboot. The next time you encounter a problem, write down the Stop error message and # and post it. If the "Write an event to the system log" from above was already checked, go to your event viewer in administrative tools and check for red circles with white x's under system events. Double click the most recent ones and then click the copy button ( just below the down arrow button). Then paste that info here as well. good luck Cheers

Reply: (edit)That event is pretty generic, it can mean several things. You need to get the machine to stop restarting on errors so that you can get a BSOD and error message. Then post the exact error message here.(eg. IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN..) please go to system properties > Advanced tab > under startup and recovery click settings > under System failure make sure that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked. Click "OK" and reboot. The next time you encounter a problem, write down ALL the Stop error message and # and post it.
BTW ..by PRO I meant Windows XP Pro or HOme Edition. AND do you have sp1 installed?
