I have a ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard, and ASUS GeForce 6600 Video card and it's when I install these 2 main drivers that my system hangs at the Windows XP startup screen.
(btw CPU - AMD 64 3000+ 939; RAM OCZ 2x512mb PC3200 GOLD)
I install windows XP SP2 and it seems to work ok, then i proceed to install the basic drivers included on the CD, then reboot, then i proceed to install the video card drivers and on reboot, it hangs.
The only way to get back into windows is to go into safemode and do a system restore from there.
I tried both drivers from the CD, and the updated ones from the net. I tried Nvidia drivers and asus drivers for the video card and they all prove to give the same results - frozen computer.
Also, I have an SATA hard drive that sometimes is detected in the post, and sometimes it is not. I understand that sometimes you have to install the SATA drivers from the mobo CD and boot it on the floppy when installing windows but wouldn't windows just simply not work if it couldn't detect your HD in the first place. I'm just wondering about that since the detection problems are showing in the post list screen.
If anyone could shed some light on the subject that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ryan, SWAG, SP2 bumps security up. Could it be that the new security level is set so high that it won't allow access to the drivers? Try lowering the settings in SP2 prior to getting the new drivers either from CD or the net and see. Same thing might also explain why the drive isn't recognized.

Thanks Ed,
How do I lower the settings in SP2? Also when a hard drive says "Hard Disk Boot Error" in the post screen, is that still windows related or is this now a hardware problem?

I have also had a problem with the asus install drivers.
I have only installed three times now.
the first and second crashes happened after I installed the mobo drivers. After a little research,, and I do mean a little,, something like five minutes... It appears to crash the system on boot after installing one of the three main motherboard drivers. It has something to do with the windows firewall turned on and the nforce firewall turning on. at least I think. this last time,, right after the windows install,, I turned off the windows firewall.
and I also did not install the ide drivers from the asus mobo diskI have a an8 sli deluxe motherobard, a sata hard drive, and a nvidia 6800 pci-e graphics card
