Subject: WinXP setup files as dual boot O/S
OS: WIN XP Pro
CPU/Ram: AMD 2500+ / 1.5GB DDR400
Model/Manufacturer: Homebrew
Comment:

I did a fresh install of windows, and everything is fine except that now when I boot, I get to a point where is asks me which O/S I would like to boot from. The choices are:
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional Setup

If I choose the first, there is no problem. If I choose the second, it takes me back into the WINXP setup and prompts me to put in my Windows program disk.

Is there any way to delete that second O/S?

Sounds like you installed XP twice. Is that what happened?

It is possible. I was trying to use a slipstreamed disk but was not having success with it (could not boot from it) and therefore installed from the original pre-SP2 disk.

If so, the second install is still midway through.

What can I do to back out of the second install?

My method may sound too dramatic but if it were for me I would nuke the HD & reinstall XP to get a clean slate of the OS.

You have no idea how much I hated seeing that advice. :)

I've finally gotten my PC back to almost where I wanted it. Any other things to try first?

The procedure you used is known as parallel installation. It is used in dire situations where you want to be able to boot into windows for data that you want to save off. To that end, it is recommended that the whole thing be taken down for a cleaner installation of the OS.

Or edit the Boot.ini file found on C:\ or right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Start up and Recovery, Edit.

Remove the line with the second start up option.

Of course make a back up copy first.

Or do it properly as previously advised.

Oh yes you can modify boot.ini but remember your Windows is now a soup of two interwined OS that is far from a clean installation. Sooner of later the soup will taste more bittered (i.e., exhibit abnormal behaviors) which is why it's recommended that you nuke it as soon as you done with what you have to do.

Just out of curiosity, if I ran the second install through to completion when prompted, would it create a second independant O/S? Alternately, is there any point at which I can run the installation, but back out of it thereby clearing or nullifying it?
