WinXp Screensaver won't start

July 28, 2010 at 05:45:08
Specs: WinXP SP3, Sempron 3.6 1gb

I 've got a Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop here running WinXP SP3 and the screen saver will not start. It was working fine until a month or so ago. I have checked the settingsand all is well there. I have checked the Windows registry and the settings are fine. I noticed that when I go into preview mode, the screen saver comes on for about a second and then stops as if the mouse or keyboard had been touched. I disconnected the USB mouse and tried again with the same results. I have not added any new hardware to this laptop. I have run defrag, chkdsk, spybot and ad-aware with no improvement. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have the Dell provided CD for the OEM (Originial Equipment Manufactuer) installation of WindowsXP ? You should, when I recievd my Dell XPS400 they sent me an entire set of CD's one for the O/S WindowsXP MCE 2005 and several others for the software that came bundled with the PC ! The reason Iam asking is becasue using the Dell CD you can run the System File Checker utility.
(SFC)
Insert the WindowsXP CD tapping on the shift key so it does not auto run, keep doing that untill the light on you CD/DVD drive stops trying to start running the CD.
Running SFC > If one needs to repair a file using Windows XP's "sfc /scannow" [ start > run > type:sfc /scannow ] tool, one often needs the CD. Note the space between the c and the / .
I run the SFC every few months just to make sure all Windows files are intact and in their originial version !
Good Luck ,Nick

"when I go into preview mode, the screen saver comes on for about a second and then stops "

That is normal for preview mode. Does the screensaver work if you set it for say 1 minute and then wait for it to come on?
If not, then why not do a system restore back to before the problem?

That doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Thanks anyway, Nick.

You may also have some malware that is causing your problem. A Malwarebyte scan would not hurt

I ran MalwareBytes on the laptop and no malware was found, which kind of surprises me. I really thought you were on to something, XpUser4Real. I'll keep working on it. Thanks for the suggestiion.
