WinXP resets regularly.

Comment:
WinXP automatically resets every 30 minutes or so after being idle. I have the option for automatic restart after system failure turned off, yet it still does it. I would love to actually be able to see an error message, it just pops it up for a split second. I know it is not bad RAM, not too hot for processor, and there is no error written to the system log, I have no IRQ conflicts. All the system stand by and other power management settings are set to never or always on, I can think of nothing else, anyone have any suggestions?

one other thing to note,, this only happens when the computer is left idle, it never happens as long as I'm actually using the computer.

I have 2 suggestions, either you put a screen saver and when its supposed to open it dosent work properly and crashes(very unlikely), or you put in the power management settings(in control panel) to go on sleep or hibernate after 30min but the sleep mode is disabled in BIOS, solution disable the go to sleep after 30min thing in power management, or activate it in BIOS. Hope this helps see ya

About the screen saver thing,, not thats not it, the screen saver is turned off currently but the problem occurs when it is on as well. About the sleep/hibernate, both are disabled (in BIOS as well as in power management) This problem just started happening out of the blue it never happened before.

Why would I reinstall XP? I would rather find the problem and fix it rather than let Windows XP win.

I am having the exact same problem, and it has been suggested to me to update your chipset drivers, in my case i have VIA 4-1 drivers, and when ever you load a video driver to reinstall the AGP portion of the chipset drivers...hope this helps, i have been unable to try this as of yet

Go into System Properties -> Advanced -> Startup & Recovery Button -> Uncheck Automatically Reboot. Now you will be able to read the eorr that is actually being generated before the resart occurs.
Cheers

Thanks to those who tried to help, I figure it out. Reinstalled the video card adapter and have had no problems since. Must have gotten corrupted somehow. Still doesn't explain why it would still automatically reboot even though that option is disabled, but hey it worked I ain't gonna worry about it no more.

Hi buddy, Put the Windows XP Cd in the Computer and boot from the Cd,it will copy some files first then u will get three options 1. Install Windows XP 2. Repair WindowsXP. 3. test Choose the 2nd option and Press R for that.Your computer will proceed to options that how would you like to start the computer and first option would be start as C:/windows .Choose this first option. It will ask you for the administrator password, press enter. You will get C:/windows there. Type chkdsk /r with cd left inside the cdrom. It will start repairing the Windows XP,when the process gets completed just restart the computer and you problem will be fixed.
