It is difficult to change the name of the Start menu, but of course, possible:
If you are a novice user, please do not attempt the following:
---
1. Download the tool Resource Hacker. Unzip to "C:\Reshack".
2. This is where it gets nasty: Start the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run > and typing REGEDIT.
3. Browse to
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"
4. Change the string value "Shell" to "C:\reshack\reshacker.exe".
WARNING! BEFORE PROCEEDING, MAKE SURE YOU PRINT THIS INFORMATION!!!
5. Restart the computer, and when the Resource Hacker program starts, click File > Open > and type "%WINDIR%\explorer.exe". If this does not work, try "C:\Windows\explorer.exe".
6. When explorer.exe opens in reshacker, double click "String Table", and double click on the little yellow folder with the number "37".
7. Click "1033", or whatever appears.
8. In the pane to the right, block select the word "start", but DO NOT SELECT THE QUOTATION MARKS! Replace the word start with whatever you like, eg "begin". So, if you used the word begin, the panel should read:
STRINGTABLE
LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US
{
578, "begin"
... (The other information is not neccessary)
}
9. When you have typed in the word of your choice, click "Compile Script".
---
Ok, so you just changed the word "start" to "begin". Your're halfway there. If you noticed, the word "start" does not start with an uppercase "s". This is because with visual styles, Start is spelt all lowercase. Without visual styles (e.g. standard Windows 98 style) the word start is spelt with a uppercase "s": "Start".
---
10. Double click folder number 38, and click the little cog, number "1033". Repeat steps 8 and 9, except this time apply these actions to the cog we just selected. Don't forget to click Compile Script!!!!!!
11. Click File > Save
(Resource Hacker will automatically save a backup of explorer.exe, named "explorer_original.exe".)
12. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. In the Task Manager, click File > "New Task (Run...)"
13. Type REGEDIT.EXE, and repeat step 3. (The key may already be displayed.)
14. Change "Shell" to "explorer.exe".
15. Restart the computer.
16. The start menu should now display the name you selected!!!!!!!
Hope this worked :) I'm gonna retest it myself right now :)
