Comment:

I'm running winXP pro. Just recently when scanning for viruses using PC-chillin, it would freeze up. After several attempts and hours I noticed that it would stop around the same point. So I was able to narrow it down to one specific file. it was located in the:

c:\documents and settings\"the user i sign in with"\local settings\temp

Filename: VSS9DG6V.05Q

Now if I try to delete it/click on it, my everything will freeze up. If i'm lucky I will be able to end the task and do other things. But most times I have to shut my PC of manually.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks

This sounds like a CRC error.

CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check, which is a method of compressing data and keeping it in a certain pattern for retrieval. If there is an error, the drive gets "lost" and doesn't know where to go to find the damaged file fragments. This causes your computer to hang for quite a while.

All you can do in my opinion is to click the file, wait for your system to unlock, then delete it. This should do it. If not, try booting your computer to DOS mode (hit F8 repeatedly until a menu pops up with this option). Then try to delete the file. If not, let us know.

Mittens.
