in my home-built xp pro system (asus tusi-m and celeron 1.3) i've found that the system freezes cold-solid when i try to switch users, log-off, or just go near the start button or menu. just hovering near these items makes the system freeze. task manager won't appear, and keyboard is unresponsive. nothing to do but restart manually.
i've re-installed the os several times, plus sp-1, and all the drivers that make windows happy. even right after the install, with no software added, the problem occurs. this happens about 5 times a day, so it's just persistent enough to be a pain in the ass. anyone have an idea?
also, my mouse is usb optical. i've tried with several mice, also ps2. same problem.

go to your adminstration icon in your control panel. Then load up your even viewer and see if you have any errors in teh three sections.
This might give you an Idea on whats going on.
Since this is a home built have you looked into possibily a BIOS update?

thanks. i'll look there. hopefully the problem will be something fixable. i just updated the bios last night. but no effect. the old bios date was only 3 months old. i just bought the m.b.

I am getting the same crap you are and I just put together a ASUS P4 2.8 GHZ with 1GB of Rambus 1066mHz ram and a Western Digital 200GB HD on a Ultra100TX2 controller card. I kept getting memory dumps and I have reinstalled the OS many times! Now the thing won't even boot up to let me reinstall! XP is crappie!

U might want to check with your hardwears.... something little like a memory errors totally F**Ks up ur whole WINDOWS.............. so check all you hardwear if they have and problem.... but phicially, but the internal...........

I have my comp freeze to death (reboot) and I try with different solutions like change video card, simple hardware set up such as one hd one cd rom etc, won't solve the problem though.
Thus, I think another way cause it deal with graphic , so i change my video card again, and this time with the old PCI graphic card, oh my god, it solves my problem. I sugest you may try!! :) if it does, then never buy a VIA chipset mother board.

I had this same problem with my XP computer also but there was no rhyme or reason for it freezing. I had it send in to HP for repairs and they sent it back saying they ran it for 14 hours straight and it had no problems. So, they sent it back to me and within a half hour it froze. So then they just sent me a refurbished pc. WIth the refurbished one I took the HardDrive out and swapped it with the faulty computer's harddrive, and the sytem ran perfectly fine. So, that led me to the conclusion that my HardDrive was fine and I had a motherboard problem. I assume that is also your problem... Did you buy it at Wal*mart???

If you upgraded to XP pro from a pirated edition........microsoft puts a cookie in the Windows update to freeze your system.
