Comment:

I have Win XP professional machine. I resized the NTFS partition and installed Linux Red Hat 8.0 and selected Lilo to be boot loader. However, when I rebooted the machine, the PC goes directly to Win XP, it does not give me the option to select the OS. It seems like to need to modify boot.ini.

How do I fix this?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

What you should do is install a boot manager that will give you a choice of OSs at startup. there is one I've used called "smart boot manager"

and a google search for:

dual-boot linux and XP

will bring up a range of how to do it tutorials; which don't generally use an add-in util. Although that is one simple way to do it.

Bootpart is exactly what you need and its free. It will update your boot.ini as required.

I have used it successfully in the exact same situation (for a different reason though).

BootPart is an easy tool for adding additional partitions to the Windows NT multi boot menu (for example, add a Linux partition).

On a related note, it is worth getting hold of the Super Grub Disk.

This is a very handy bootable CD which will allow you to boot Linux partitions which cannot be booted in the normal way (e.g. when you re-install windows).

Super Grub Disk is a bootable cdrom, usb or floppy specially designed for the restore of boot.

1. GNU/Linux is installed in your pc, you reinstall Windows and GNU/Linux no longer boots as Grub menu no longer appears on boot. You can restore Grub on your MBR automatically.

2. You have Windows installed in a second hard disk and it does not want to boot. If you swap it from Super Grub Disk you will be able to boot it.

3. You can not boot Windows because your MBR is corrupt or Grub installation is not well done or whatever. With Super Grub Disk you will be able to boot the partition where Windows reside.

4. No Active Partition Found message appears. With Super Grub Disk you can activate partitions.

There's a rare body...; someone who came back with how he resolved it - and the source - for all to share in future...

Many thanks to Truc!

Looks like he did a re-install rather than fix the problem. Or did he use linuxrescue? He does not really say.

Oh well so long as you are happy Truc.

Yes, I only re-installed Red Hat 8.0 and used Grub loader instead of lilo loader.
