I am running Windows XP Home with a P4 2.4GHz processor, 512 MB RDRAM, and a wireless network. The adaptor is a USB LinkSys 2.4GHz Wireless Adaptor and the router is a D-Link 614+ Wireless Router.
My problem is that whenever I connect to the network, which is usually within one minute of turning on the computer, my computer will hang for around 3-7 minutes. I can't do anything except open My Computer or the Start menu and browse through the contents. If I try to open a program, I'll see the hourglass for 2 seconds or so, then nothing happens. Then, at the end of the 3-7 minutes, everything I tried to open during the hang time opens at once, and the computer runs as it normally would. I can, however, use programs that I have opened before connecting to the internet. So if, for example, I wish to listen to music, I can run Winamp before connecting to the net, then play music normally until the hang period is over. Or if I wish to surf the net, I can run Internet Explorer before connecting to the net, then once I do, I can use the program normally during the hang period.
If I have opened the Task Manager before connecting to the internet and monitor processor usage during the hang time, there appears to be no problem. No program is using any extraordinary amount of RAM or CPU.
As a side note, my WinXP computer is connected to a Win98 (first edition) computer through the wireless network.
