Try just tapping F8 over and over as soon as you start up. I'm not sure what button you would push to get into BIOS at start up. As soon as you start up for BIOS try pushing either the F10, F8, F5, F2, or DEL key.

You need to make sure that the boot sequence in your BIOS is set to Boot from CD-Rom first, the A, then C. Ther is no need to press any button like F8. for the booting purpose. It will usually ask you "Boot from CD-ROM?" if it finds a bootable cd at startup.

got all that yes everything is set to do as it should but it does boot from cd. Heres the wierd thing though i noticed that from several computers ive worked on sometimes when you try to boot from a cd with windows xp and 2000 if the o/s is installed and its working properly it wont show the boot from cd option but if i boot to a cd which has 98 dos session and some of my utilities on it it boots fine.

its almost like the cd's are reading the partition tables to see if thier fine or not...

i just find it odd...
i did some research and alot of other people have the same problem... i havent found a fix yet.

I have puters with both systems installed and havent had this trouble, nor have I heard about it anywhere else. I dont quite understand your first post, are you trying to boot from a CD or trying to get into safe mode??? or both!!! Have you tried some other CD's that are known to boot??? Maybe your cmos has lost that info and needs to be reset???

yes i did try it on other computers i tried it with different bootable cd's etc....

i went into bios and turned off harddrive as a bootable option because it goes into windows when it cannot boot to the cd
it has two cdroms in this computer one a
creativelabs 52X cdrom
memorex 48X * 24X * 48X CDRW
neither boot to cd when set to do so.

what gets me is it spins then reads the cd and sits at the post screen nothing goes from there

There is a problem if you cannot boot into safe mode. That is pretty much an essential ability for Windows. And you said that your computer locks up if you tap the f8 key?

its not my computer but im stuck fixing it
anyway i found the problem in case anyone else wants to know this

i unplugged the ide cable and tried to boot from cd all of them they ALL BOOT FINE
(from this same computer)...AHHHH HAAA

so after looking closer it seems the person who built it put the jumper on the hard drive as master so i removed the jumper and
took out all the cds and checked for my missing f8 screen and BAM thier it was....

so check those jumpers and ide cables

ive seen a problem in the past like this where someone put a cable on a drive incorrectly and i couldn't boot to a win98SE cdrom.....

you'd think that this would never relate to each other but im tellin it did....

If you unplugged your IDE cable, "NOTHING" should boot up, could you be more specific....

no i unplugged my ide cable to boot to my cd's

which i narrowed down the problem to being my harddrive

after i reconnected the cable i realized the jumper must be causing this trouble
so i removed the jumper off the harddrive and which it then uses a cable select according to the hd.
(and it doesnt matter because its connected to the motherboard by itself)

anyway after removing the jumper and with the cable connected it boots to a cd and the f8 option screen works fine.....
