I have a WinXP computer that won't install programs for Win95-95. I know there have been post on a similar subject but none with a strait answer. The error is "DOSX.EXE Must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in the path" That isn't exacly what it says but I don't ahve it up now. How do I fix it??? It is really anoying to buy software and have the error pop up.

Brandon,

Go to the link below and download "XP_Fix.EXE".
"This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.
We recommend that you download this file and save it to your desktop or to another location where you can find it. Double click on the file to run it once it's downloaded. If problem reoccurs in the future, simply re-run this program".

16 bit fix #1

Below is another link with a similar fix to download & run.

16 bit fix #2

Another fix some have used is to do a search for autoexec.nt You will probably find it in C:\WINDOWS\repair. Copy and paste it into C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Here's a link with Microsoft's description and solution to the problem.

16 bit fix #3

The 2 links below explain what may be causing the problem (Malware).

Possible Cause #1 For 16 bit error

Possible Cause #2 For 16 bit error

Brandon, I had the same problem.

1. When I executed command.com (not cmd)
I saw:

Nie mozna odnalezc pliku (File does not exist) x3
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

D:\DOCUME~1\NORBERT>

2. I checked Autoexec.nt and there were lines:
REM Instaluj rozszerzenia CD ROM
lh %SystemRoot%\mscdexnt.exe

REM Instaluj readresator sieci (ładuj przed dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\redir.exe

REM Instaluj obsługę DPMI
lh %SystemRoot%\dosx.exe

So I checked dosx.exe and others if they really exist. They did.

3. After many things I finally typed in command line:
attrib -S %SystemRoot%\dosx.exe
attrib -S %SystemRoot%\redir.exe
attrib -S %SystemRoot%\mscdexnt.exe

I don't know why but it worked! I hope my response will help you.
