I can not read some burned cd's in WinXP.
I have switched from Win2K form witch I have burned cd's.
I did a clean install of XP, now I can no longer read cd's I have created from Win2000.
The FAT table has not changed,( FAT32).
I installed all the aspi layers 4.60 (1021)
I burned a cd today useing FireBurner. It seemed to burn just fine.
but I have put the cd in 3 differnt cd-roms running Win XP and none of them will read the cd, but it reads in Win98 so I know it burned just fine.
I need help here please.

simalar problem here sandman. burned data under win me cant read it in XP. XP thinks its a blank CD-R and shows no data in explorer. My work around till the bugs are ironed out: I set up a dual boot with XP and WinMe and created a third partition for data. I just boot into win me and move the data to the third partition then boot into XP and retrieve the data. I keep all data from both OS'S on the third partition so i can access any of it from either OS. The UDF suggestion didnt work for me either. HP cdwriter plus. Not an answer to your question but I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion,
but unless the two O/S are not only on seperate partions, but seperate drives they can write systems files to each other.
WinME==== EVIL
if I was it would have to be 2000, but I dont like to dual boot. I may just go back to 2000 :( unless I can find a fix or untill there is one.
thanks for the reply though

If you burned those cd's w/direct cd. You need to install Easy CD 5.0 w/update patch for XP and you will be able to read again. WinXp's Direct CD will not work in reading those CDs ( atleast not for me) I had the same problem.

p.s when you first insttall ECD w/direct cd you will get errors upon installing and boot up, but once you install patch all will be good..

hope that helps..

I had the same problem, with cd's i burned using Nero in WinME. A workaround I found for this is to rightclick on the cd drive, go to properties, hardware tab, doubleclick on your cd-drive, go to volumes, and click the "populate" button. This allowed me to access the previously hidden data on the cd's. Please email me if this worked for you, just curious...

Same problem here. I have a lot of files that I
burned with Nero in Windows 98. Can't read them
with Windows XP, but I can in my Win 98 machine.
Interesting thing I noticed is that if I burn the
same files to CD using Adaptec Easy CD creator
under Windows 98, I can read the files under
Windows XP. This leads me to believe that since
Windows XP incorporates Roxio(formerly Adaptec) burnings software, it might be a problem with the ASPI layer that Nero is using as it is not the same as Roxio's.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

hey Michael. I just want to say thanx so much for the help. I was having trouble with my direct CD created cd's that i burned in windows 98 and i couldnt read them in Winxp until i tried your tip to go to the drive properties and click on the populate and it worked!!!!:). You saved me so much time and probably my allowance too. I woulda had to by more cd's cuz I was gonna downgrade to win98 and copy all the files from my disks on to my hardrive then upgrade back to winxp and reburn them using XP. Thanx soooooo much for the tip! It was genious! I saw someone on here said it didnt work for them maybe u r doing it wrong. or maybe it wont work for cd-rw disks i use cd-r disk and the tip worked

Thanks Michael that trick works for me too.

I'm still thinking there has to be a better way to do this though, so that your PC can just read the CD's automaticaly without going through the extra hassel each time. If I find a way I will post it here.

I've also got an HP CDwriter Plus as someone else did. I recently installed XP and most of my burned CDs won't work. They were all created from a variety of programs, which is why some of them do work I suppose. I just had a friend (Who has no problems with this in XP) burn a CD for me with Nero, and it's another one I can't read. I tried the 'Populate' trick with no luck. Anyone found any other things to try?
