I didn't find out about the dualboot function in winxp , until after i did a clean install. But now i would like to have win98 also , since my soundcard doesn't work in xp.
I installed win98 on another harddrive and aferwards i copied everything from that hd to the D: drive on the hd where i have winxp. Now i need to manually edit the boot file in winxp , so that it knows that i also have win98. Can anyone with winxp on c: and win98 on D: tell me what their boot.ini file looks like ???

save yourself some heartache and just fdisk the drive and start over. put 98 on first. then xp. if not you will be spending the rest of your life trying to make this thing work right. first you sand the door then paint it. if you try to paint it first then sand it your screwed.

yup, you need to start all over. put win98 on
first as suggested, then do a clean install of winxp (not upgrade). Follow prompts and create a partition for winxp (using free space left over), then after winxp setup completes you will be able to boot up and select winxp or win98. Have fun!

copy the following into boot.ini file at c:\ i.e. the root directory on c drive

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=C:\
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 SE OEM

listen here,

if you have installed win98 by making D drive active, you should add "D:\ = "MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98" "
OTHERWISE IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED FROM C DRIVE (USING FLOPPY OR ELSE) YOU SHOULD TRY " C:\= "MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98" "

TRY THESE BOTH FOR BOOTING , ONE OF THEM WILL DEFINITELY WORK
