alright i just read a thread and it talked about if you ran spybot or whatnot and suddenly couldn't get onto the internet you could just dl this program "WinSockFix" and walaa it works. but i did i ran it and my internet worked. but low and behold i had a program that worked over a network and then somehow it cleared or did something that i couldn't see the info over the network. the program was quickbooks. and old invoices were not able to be seen. then i read about this horrible program "WinSockFix" and saw it deletes everything in the registry and i was just wondering what the hell that was or why that happened and some info on what is a registry. sigh... i wouldn't be surprised if this program "WinSockFix" was created by the devil or maybe someone worse (bill gates) well if you have any info on registry and or anything i asked for can you tell me thanks or just links to websites. thanks in advance

Here's some reading:
▫ What is "Windows Sockets"WinSockFix is a little program (I think it's homemade stuff - not a commercial program) that does exactly what its name promises: it returns the "Windows Sockets" to its original state, if Windows Sockets should become damaged (due to spyware, or ...). It's meant to be run only if you can't repair your internet connectivity after cleaning with anti-spyware programs, sortof as a last resort type of repair.
I would sooner suspect that QuickBooks to be at fault in this matter, though: I've seen QB mentioned on the Microsoft site for causing trouble. So, my guess is that QB itself is responsible for causing whatever trouble you're having.
My guess is that QB doesn't use the Windows Sockets correctly, and alters it when QB is installed. If you then reset the Windows Sockets, QB won't like the changes and that's the problem you have now.
If you can reinstall QuickBooks without losing your data, then that will be the easiest way, I think. But the QuickBooks website may have more info. Maybe even some way to just reinstall the part that handles the WinSockets. Sometimes, the install program has a repair function too - check for that.
I'll have a look around the web too, but in any event, stay out of the registry if you don't know what changes you're making. It WILL cause more problems if you just make random changes in the registry.

If System Restore was enabled, then you can probably go back to a RestorePoint of a date&time just before you used WinSockFix. System Restore will undo the changes that WinSockFix made.
