Just a quick question. I am using winrar for a business purpose and when I am creating archives that are split, all the files are created with .rar extensions. I wish instead for them to be of the format .r00, .r01, .r02 etc. with only the one file being named .rar. I know I have seen this before. The reason for this is that when I do a search for all my archived data I want to simply do a search for .rar files so I can see the individual archives that I have backed up, and not all the files associated with each of them.

Thanks.

It amazes me how many people never read the help files - even when they can't figure a feature out (me included)!

From the manual:

By default RAR volumes have names like 'volname.partNNN.rar', where NNN is the volume number. Using -vn switch it is possible to switch to another, extension based naming scheme, where the first volume file in a multi-volume set has the extension .rar, following volumes are numbered from .r00 to .r99.

So, to accomplish what you are after would require you to run it from the command line. For info on how to do that go to the help file and select the contents tab. Then go to the section "Command line mode"

There *may* be third party tools that allow you to do this with WinRar without having to drop to a command prompt.

Actually, it can (or at least could) be done from the GUI. I just don't remember how at the moment.

Okay, in the Compression Options, there should be an Advanced tab. In there is a checkbox labeled Old style volume names. Select that.

Sweet! Thank you so much! I saw that option when I right clicked and did "add to archive"...but it was greyed out. I had to go into the main program and alter the default settings to make it work. It's still greyed out but now it does it by default. Cool.
