winlogon.exe-Application Error

Specs: Windows XP
I have Windows XP Home Edition SP3 on my computer. When I shutdown my computer I get the message winlogon.exe-Application Error The Instruction at "0x5ad71375" referenced memory at "0xffffffff". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program Click on Cancel to debug the program either one goes to a blue screen with the message STOP:c000021a{Fatal System Error} The windows Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a Status of 0x0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down. At startup I get a message winlogon.exe Error signature. I click on details with these codes szAppName:winlogon.exe szAppver: szModName:uxtheme.dll szModVer:6.0.2900.5512 offset:00001375 further details The followingfiles will be included in this error report. C:\DOCUM~1\COMPAQ~1.Zep\locals~1Temp\ WERcaae.div00\winlogon.exemdmp C:\DOCUM~1COMPAQ~1.ZEP\locals~1\TempWERcaae.div00\apocopate.txt Is there a hotfix so that I do not have to go through the daunting task on a complete system reinstall.

Try this.

Go to c:\windows\system32 and find the uxtheme.dll file. Rename it to uxtheme.dll.old. Then restart. Should repair, reinstall itself.
