Comment: I recently obtained the lovely W32/Alemod.f.dll virus/trojan. McAffe however, claimed to be unable to delete or quarantine the virus so I restarted only to find a Explorer.EXE - Application Error window pop up twice. Regardless of what I do I am left with a blank background and no start menu, taskbar, or desktop icons. I was able to log onto safe mode (which allowed me to see the icons etc.) and run another virus scanner which targeted the trojan as being in the file Wininet.dll. I allowed it to delete this file (stupidly) and now when the computer is rebooting I receive another error message saying that the system needs Wininet.dll to run! Mind you the background problem has still not gone away, so I am unable to see any taskbar, icons etc. either in regular or safe mode. Help anyone? Thanks

Reply: (edit)Thank you, I appreciate the help, but I am unable to acess that link from my other computer. I can't see any icons, folders, taskbar etc.. I did try to open my browser through the ctrl alt delete taskbar, but the same message pops up telling me I can't connect due to the unlocated file wininet.dll So I can't access the internet to download a replacement wininet.dll Any suggestions?

Reply: (edit)Hi a horrible trojan alemod, took me a few goes to rid it off a client pc any way you will have to replace the wininet.dll, easy enough to copy from your xp cd or here; http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet I used avg free antivirus which quarantined then deleted the relevant parts of alemod then you lose internet connection as youve deleted the alemod component, so have your xp cd to hand to replace the missing dll. Uninstall delete PSGuardInstall.exe. otherwise it keeps dialing home. http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/virus.aspx?id=43296 regards

Reply: (edit)to coppy wininet.dll try this: press ctrl+alt+del click file --then --click open(run task) --click browse--browse to local drive c: --look for i386--in i386 look for wininet.dll then copy this file.--now browse to local drive c:--then goto windows folder--now look for system32 folder--now paste wininet.dll file here.all u need to do now is to restart the computer. as far as trojans are concerned go to www.techdomain.ds4a.com then the download section--go to free antispyware then install spysweeper.spysweeper will remove all trojans.it's free for 30 days.do delete spysweeper after ur job is done.it slow the computer a lot. good luck. ---bobby
