Comment:

Hello - I just finished building a computer and encountered the following error when attempting to install Windows XP Pro (SP2) Plus Digital Media. "File symc.810.sys caused an unexpected error (8192) at line 3540 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup.c." I wasn't able to find any help on the Microsoft site nor elsewhere on the web. Any suggestins will be appreciated.

Thank you

Not enough info.
Is this build all of new components? What are the system specifications? A lot of problems encountered when installing XP come down to faulty or incompatible ram. Is the XP disk you're using an original or a backup copy? Have you cleaned the disk? The filepath of the error indicates the error is being reported in a file in D drive. I think D drive will probably be a ramdrive created during the instal process. If so then that would tend to support the theory of a ram problem. What motherboard/CPU and exact ram are you using? Download Memtest86.

Richard59 thank you for the prompt reply.

Here's more info: This is an all new build; the XP disk is not a backup.

CPU - Intel Pentium 4/ 2.4C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology

Should not be any incompatibility there. If you're certain the motherboard microswitches have been correctly set for your configuration about the only thing I might suggest at this time would be take out one of the sticks of ram and see if you can instal the operating system with just one in place. You can then add the second stick later.

Richard59 - Thanks for your willingness to help. I tried removing one of the memory sticks and reconfirmed that the settings on the motherboard are correct. I'm still working on the problem and will let you know how it turns out.
