Method 1: Remove the registry entry
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Method 2: Replace the existing driver
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. If Control Panel is in Category view, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System.
3. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
4. Click the drive with the question mark next to it.
5. On the Action menu, click Uninstall. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
6. Repeat steps 4 through 5 for any other drives with question marks.
7. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
Note If Windows XP cannot locate the driver for your device, the device may not be supported by Windows XP

Does the CDROM drive show up in device manager?

Click Start > Run

Type devmgmt.msc <enter>
Double click DVD/CD-ROM drives
Check if your cdrom drive shows up there.

Did you open Regedit by :

Click Start>run>Regedit>Ok ?

Did you In the LEFT Pane of Registry Editor window click the + (Plus sign) by the left side of :

.+ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\?
.
. Did you then click the Plus of + SYSTEM?
.Plus of +CurrentControlSet
.Plus of +Control
.Plus of + Class
.Folder NOT Plus of + []{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

and look in the RIGHT Pane (which has 3 columns) for LowerFilters and then UpperFilters under Name column and curreponding to that under Type column you should see Reg_Multi_Siz . The third column shows Data

When you opened the key shown below as described step by step above in response # 5,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
and clicked on the folder icon and highlighted the long alpahnumeric string starting with curly bracket {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
did you see the UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the RIGHT Pane?

If you find them, First you must EXPORT the above key as described in steps 4 and 5 in Response #1 above. This is as a safe guard for any registry editing mishap or failure in which case you can restore it to Pre-edit status by just clicking on the Exported and Saved key.

Next you edit the Value. The editing needed is Deletion of those Upper and Lower Filters one after the other.
RIGHT -Click First, the UpperFilters and then from the popup menu click Delete
Repeat same steps to Delete the LowerFilters

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot PC and look in Device Manager and My Computer for reappearance of CD-ROM drive.

Did you load XP on top of Windows 98 or format the drive and do a clean install? I suspect you made the first choice - usually a BAD idea.

You may be SOL, but go ahead and try the other things mentioned if you want. They may or may not work (for a while). If you can backup your data and reinstall and FORMAT the drive first, you will avoid many heartaches down the road.

Put the CD in the drive and reboot the machine. Make sure you have it set to boot from the CDROM first in the BIOS/Setup screen. There will be some key or keys to press as it starts to boot - F10 for a Compaq, F2 for a Dell, Delete for many - it will show on screen but you may have to look quickly for it.

Hey Robby,

First see if your CD drive is ejecting... If yes, check it in the BIOS to see if it is detected there... If it is detected there, then what Maadhurimn suggested will definetely work... I will try to simplyfy what he said:

1)Click Start - Run - Type "RegEdit" and click OK
2)Go to, [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class]
3)Click on the Folder "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
4)On the Right side of the windows, delete UpperFilters and LowerFilters
5)Close Registry Editor and Restart the System

If the CD Drive is not detected in the BIOS, then either the drive is gone bad or the drive cable is loose... Let us know what happened.

As Nick said , did you verify in the BIOS Setup for the presnce of your CD-ROM drive? If BIOS is not showing it the problem must be hardware issue such as the CD-ROM Drive is not connected properly (Loose IDE cable or Power connector,) bad cables or Damaged CD-ROM drive itself.

VERIFY BIOS Setup for CD-ROM:

On reboot press Del, F1 or F2 key as the case may be for your Emachine's BIOS Setup. Look around in the Main Menu or submenu's for CD-ROM drive to see if your device is recogniized.
If not seen Don't proceed to the next but instead need to open the case for hardware troubleshoot. If BIOS shows your Drive, Exit and boot to Windows and perform the steps below:

Please Copy and Paste on your response the ENTIRE Registry key you have opened to look for what we are asking you to delete. This is to verify whether you are going to the key we suggested:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
M

To copy and paste here this is what you should do.

1. Open the key as shown in previous posts.
2. Once you have opened the last key in that long Hive_Keys_Subkeys chain, click the Edit menu on Registry Editor and then click Copy Key Name from the drop down menu.
3. Press the kesy CTRL and V in this box where you want that to appear in your message
