Dear All,
My Windows XP Machine uses network on every click I make. whether I open any MS Office file or just browse local hard drive, it starts sending bytes on network which slows down the system performance drastically. My system has updated Symantec Antivirus installed with necessary windows xp patches. Does anybody have any idea what could be the problem. Thanks in advance Learner

Install a good two way firewall. At the very least you will find out what app is sending to the Internet.

In a LAN the computers will talk to each other on a regular bases. But what you're seeing is the search for the networked drives and the network printer. When you open say Word for exsample it will search the network for anything related to Word. It's just doing it's job. There is a setting that you can uncheck to make it stop looking for the network drives and the network printer. But tonight I am totaly burned out and can't remember where I saw that setting. I am truely sorry but one of the other guys can point you in the right place.
I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Could be normal network activity or it could be spyware. You don't know at this point, so Teri (above) is right... you should install a good 2 way firewall. This will track and log everything that goes in and out of your machine.
