Do you want to use the XP bootloader, or lilo or grub? I think mdk8 uses lilo by default, and adds your xp partition to the boot list as nt by default. I've had mdk and xp dual booting before, so I know it's possible...

try using a boot up disk, and once into your GNU/Linux MDK, go to MDK control center. There you can configure LILO or grub to run XP selecting the right partition from your hard disk

I have just finished installing Mdk 8.1 on my XP Pro machine. Booted from the Mdk CD. It pretty much takes care of it all. Just remember while installing you must have a FAT32 partition if you want to share files between two OS. I used last partition for Mdk.
