Is that the EXACT message?

Did you recently uninstall any programs incorrectly? Have you run antivirus software and spyware/malware detector programs?

I get absolutley nothing when searching using
htpcpurr.dll or htpcpurr.
I suspect you have mistyped it or you copied it down wrong.
Doublecheck it.

I too am guessing the error isn't being typed correctly. There should be a backslash \ after the C:

Have you run msconfig to see what's attempting to startup?

If that's correct there is absolutely no info about that file on the internet.

"the specified module could not be found."

Obviously something in the configuration of your computer is pointing to that file, probably lines in your Registry, and it can't be found.

You get messages like this most commonly when someone has deleted files rather than having un-installed a program or programs properly in Add/Remove software or elsewhere, or when an install or un-install of a program has been interrupted improperly.
Take a look in your Recycle Bin to see if that file is there - if it is restore, it to it's original location, along with all other files there you don't recognize as you having deleted yourself, then reboot to see if you still get the message.

"have tried to system restore, it won,t let me,"

What do you mean by that? Was it turned off or turned off at some point and no suitable restore points were available? Did you log on to a user profile with administrator priviledges when you tried that?

By the way, many experts now recommend you DO NOT turn off System Restore when using anti-Spyware or nti-virus programs as is often suggested you do by those programs. You cannot be infected by malware that is found in the restore point files unless you load those files, and sometimes the anti- program will remove more than it should, particular anti-spyware programs, and if so you often can't easily fix the problem the anti-program caused with System Restore disabled - you may have to re-install Windows, or do a Repair Setup (install) of Windows if you don't want to lose the data already on the partition Windows is installed on. They recommend you get your computer working properly again by running the scans, etc,, and only THEN you can turn off System Restore if you like, to clear malware anti-spyware or anti-virus programs find in tthe restore point files.

Restoring a previous restore point won't help if whatever points to the file is still there, probably in the registry, and the file has been deleted. System Restore can't un-delete deleted files.
.....

If by past experience your think your kids will tell you what they did if you ask them, though they may not diluge that unless asked, even if they think they may have done something wrong, rather than them not telling you anything they think might get them in trouble, ask them.

Did you check to see if htpcpurr.dll is in your recycle bin?
If it is, restore it to it's original location, along with all other files there you don't recognize as you having deleted yourself, then reboot to see if you still get the message.

"command=rundll32.exe "c:\WIN"

That's probably not the full path to where the file is supposed to be.
Start up Msconfig again, go to Startup, place your cursor on the vertical line before Location, and drag that to the right so you can see the full path on the line for htpcpurr, and tell me what the full line says.

By the way, while you're there, you could try clicking on the checkmark in the box at the beginning of the htpcpurr line to remove the checkmark, then rebooting - that might get rid of the message you get, it might not.
It might automatically re-load after you reboot, in which case it will make an enabled line in Startup in Msconfig identical to the one you disabled. If you do see that, if you enable both lines, there will be only one line there for htpcpurr after the next time you reboot. The same applies to any identical lines there, where one is enabled and one or more are not.

Msconfig pops up two windows titled System Configuration Utility when the windows desktop is loading after you have next booted or rebooted whenever you make changes in MSconfig. The first one has a small box at left you can click on to insert a checkmark - if you do that, the second window will not appear, and both windows will not appear after that, until the next time you make changes in Msconfig.

As I have said there is nothing about htpcpurr on the internet, but there is info about htpc.

These may give you some clues about what software you have/had that may have/have had htpcpurr.dll in it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTPC
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/5...
http://www.smacki.com/c273
http://www.digital-digest.com/softw...

(search using htpc)

You could also try searching your registry for all mentions of htpcpurr.dll or htpcpurr to see if that yiels you any other information.

Start up regedit.
Regedit in XP always opens set to the same location you last found something in the registry. It also doesn't start searching at the beggining of the registry if it found something and you then search for something new, or search again without pressing F3, while you are in regedit.
On the left, whenever you start a new search, make sure the first entry in the list - My Computer - is highlighted so that when you search you're searching the entire registry.

If the search finds something, look at it's details - if it's on the right side there may be other lines on the same page that give you clues about it.
If the search finds something, press F3 after you have finished looking at it, to see if you can find more instances. Continue pressing F3 after you find something and look at it until nothing else is found.

"checked in recycle bin, no sign of anything related to concern,...."

How do you know? It's only of no concern if you DO recognize it as being something you deleted.

None of that is of help.
Are you sure you reset the search in regedit to the beginning at left?

Did you look at the links I pointed to?
