windows\system32\config\system missing

Specs: Windows xp
when i boot my xp machine i get that message i inserted the cd to try and recover the system and the machine asks me to boot from cd so i try to but the machine will not recognize my keyboard or any other one in order to allow me to hit a key to start the install program...i have another machine running windows 7 is there a way i can install the dead drive into that machine and edit the boot files from there if you can help with this it would be greatly appreciated

Try using the original keyboard that came with the computer. USB and/or wireless may not work in the pre-Windows screens. Mice aren't supposed to work in that environment.
