\windows\system32\config\system error

September 16, 2011 at 08:28:03
Specs: Windows XP SP3
Widows could not start error on my Sony RS-600 series which came with OEM installed XP
The system has been updated and there are a number of applications that I prefer not to lose.
There is no setup disc, and the system recovery DVD appears to only allow format and reload of the factory system files.
Is there a way to correct this error and leave the riest of the files alone?
It is suggested that DOS CHKDSK may fix it, but I cannot get to the DOS prompt.

If you want any chance of recovering the system without formatting, you'll need to get a hold of an XP setup disc and choose to 'repair' instead of full install. Easiest way to get it is through a torrent, although I believe it's against Microsoft's EULA (never stopped me though!)

All reference to r (repair) indicate that it can't be used on OEM installed systems, something to do with passwords and things built into hives. If they get changed then all is lost.
