I have read several post on here but none are helping with the problem I have.. My sister n law's Toshiba satellite laptop has this error. Windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt.. Now my problem is she lost her disk that came with her computer.. so I was reading some post about this issue and they refer to if you have the disk that came with the computer. so I took my XP home upgrade disk and it will let me get to the recovery console but when I type in one of the commands it say access denied. what can i do next? also i tried going to toshiba's website and they don't offer you to buy the restore disk they want you to send to them and pay$110.. or more. Anyone have any ideas?

Perhaps running the SFC will help to replace the missing files ? I run SFC (system file checker) every now and then to replace any missing or corrupted WinXP files ? You must have the installation CD for the O/S, unless a backup of the O/S is on your hard drive ? To run SFC open a command box (DOS) by going to start, run type cmd ,when the box opens type sfc /scannnow (notice the space between the c and the / must be entered that way) ! Good Luck,
Nick

Nick thank you for your reply but I can not get to the desktop here is alist of things I have tried. 1. I have hit F8 and tried every single one on the list. I manged to get to the recovery console using my xp upgrade cd. when I did that I was able to check disk for errors/repair it gets to 75% and freezes. I don't know if this will make a difference or not but when i get to recovery console it only shows C:/ not C:/windows.. Larry thank you for your post.

if you are at the C:/ prompt just type in

cd windows and change to the directory. You can drill down to the sfc command or down to that folder that windows says is missing or corrupt that way.

angeljam, when you boot from your CD you do 'not' want to use the Recovery Console. You want to select 'Install' at that point to get past the Recovery Console. Then 'later' select the 'Repair' option.
I'm not sure, but maybe it will let you do a 'Repair Install' without a password.

What do you see on the screen when you're typing C:/chkdsk /p, and why are you doing the /p?

What you should see is C:\ (notice the backslash NOT forward) and either run chkdsk from there, or type cd windows and then run the sfc command.

Jennifer SUMN Sorry I hit the wrong slash. I did mean \ that.. when I type in cd windows or any others it comes up and says either command not recognized type help for list of commands.. or it says access denied.also when i type chkdsk it comes up and says error file missing ot corrupt. so I am going to have to see if i can't order her disk some how.. thank you guys for your help.
