I recently installed an upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP. Everything was
going fine for about a month. However, I recently got the following message when I tried to boot my PC...
Invalid Boot.ini
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Windows\System32\Hal.dll
...it couldn't get passed DOS and kept falling over at this message. So I
looked on the Microsoft website and they suggested I installed recovery
console.I have done that, but now every time I start, DOS asks if I want to start
in safe mode, safe mode with commands, last known safe configuration or
normally. If I select start normally, it logs onto windows fine, but when I
reboot, it gives me the same options. I have tried this several times. What do I need to do next so my computer just starts without these options
and runs properly?

Dave, Start>Run type in: msconfig and under the General tab choose "Normal Startup" click Apply/OK.
