When I go to shut down or restart or even log off nothing happens. Sometimes a few program (running in backround) may close but otherwise the computer is still functioning. If i go to task manager and manual kill the explorer and then shut down through task manager it will work but thats the only way besides killing the power. Any thoughts? Thanks.

i had this problem not so long ago, run a virus scan, and if you have it adaware.
it fixed my problem, i had a couple of trojans and a few sneaky adaware files.
i've been told it happens if you use file sharing programs a lot

If the above doesn't work.

Your going to have to find out what is running in the background.

Do a quick search on each program and see if there is a known problem. It may just be that you need to update some programs.

Another option to try is a program called EndItAll which is quite effective at closing programs down, not good enough for a permanent fix but should give you a temporary reprieve.

Turns out it is a virus - a Kazaa virus called W32.HLLW.Logpole but I cant seem to get rid of it!!! I ran many different virus scans - online and my own norton - which is now up to date. Tried deleting the registry files like it said online but I can't find the ones it is asking for they are not there - here is a link to symantec's page: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.logpole.html

Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
