Windows xp won't finish install

January 10, 2013 at 05:13:43
Specs: WIndows 98, Intel Pentium II

I've been trying to install XP on my old Windows 98 laptop and the install gets to the stage where it restarts but the computer just boots back into Win98 like nothing happened.

What am I doing wrong?

For starters, it doesn't appear you have enough RAM to run XP. It will install & run, but with only 258MB (did you mean 256MB?), it will run painfully slow.

If the system is still booting into Win98, you're obviously not doing the XP installation correctly. The HDD must be wiped clean. What you need to do is boot off the XP disc, wipe out all current partitions, create one or more new partitions, format using NTFS, then proceed with the installation. You may have to enter the BIOS & change the boot order.

Yes I meant 256MB,

Ok so I set it to boot from CD Rom drive, The windows setup screen appears, starts loading files THEN I get a message that says "The file aic78xx.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue"

Then the computer restarts, press any key to boot from CD, windows setup starts, starts loading files then I get a message that the file 3wDrv100.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue. Setup failed, press any key to restart your computer.

Computer restarts and just for the fun of it I start windows setup again, files start loading, The file aic78xx.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

So I give up for now.

I await your advice.

Your XP disc is bad.

If the disk is bad try washing it gently with washing up liquid, using your thumb from center to outside (rather than a circular motion) and rinsing dry.

Alternatively, I've sometimes found that a copy will work when an original doesn't - probably because copying is a steady read process.

Having said that I agree with the point about lack of RAM for XP.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
