Popgun2K,
Have you tried to do a system restore? Meaning as you're rebooting hit and (I hold)the F10 key until it goes into the System restore menu. If you can do that, then you can select a restore point prior to you installing SP1. If not well, as a last resort you can reformat the hard-drive. Of course you'll lose everything you had on it. I have two drives, an 80 GIG and 200 GIG. When I have have files I don't want to lose, I make a copy and put them on my second drive. I also have a 30GIG which is my pride and joy and it's ONLY used as a backup in case something happens to my files I have on my 200 GIG. One more thing, when I first got Windows XP I had my 30 gig in as my secondary full of my files. I wanted to reformat my primary hard drive after downing and trying many programs. I just wanted to clean up my hard drive an free space. I went into the destructive format and I watched as it did it's thing. When all was said and done, I noticed that all the icons were still on my desktop. Not thinking (1 too many beers) I started the process again. Once all was done, the icons weres still there. I went to My Computer and to MY HORROR, my 30 gig was now named the same as my 80 gig! I had lost all of my precious files including photos I couldn't get back. XP DID NOT ask which drive to format and it didn't specify either. Well with luck and friends, I have my files back and that's why I have my 30 gig as a backup. So, if you choose to reformat your hard drive and you have more than one drive installed, I would disconnect the one you don't want reformated it during the process.

Take care,

Thanks,
Jim

Ok so I have read all of the or at least most of the responses to no go on the hard drive. WELL!!! My problem is the screen stays black after I turn the sick baby on.
This is happens in Windows XP and all of the MS patches have been downloaded. Every so often I loose my boot sector and the system will not boot.
If I put my XP pro disk in the cdrom and turn it on and boot from cdrom (Yes I hit any key to boot from CDROM) it goes to setup is checking your configuration and then stays black screen. I have no other option but to restart the system. When I do the screen fills with up nothing but colored rectangles all over the screen and nothing else goes on after that. I took the drive out and went to another computer and go as a slave and the drive is found and I can move data as normal(in other words I can use it as a slave and all is fine). My question is this.... Do I have a bad mother board or maybe a power unit going down? If I reformat it I can load Xp and all works great...FOR AWHILE. This is the fourth time it has happened and i am sick of it. Any Ideas?
