Hello,

My laptop with Windows XP stopped to boot because of a corrupted ntoskrnl.exe file. I tried replacing that file with a new one from my Reinstall/boot CD, but that resulted in the blue screen. Then I tried a bootcfg /rebuild but that gave me another blue screen error. I decided to do a reinstall in place but that hangs in the "Installing Windows" stage. I can't start my laptop in the safe mode either. Ever since I tried the reinstall in place, the system has permanently gone into the setup mode - it keeps trying to repeat the setup and hangs. I'm desperate. Can anyone please help me recover my data?

Thanks

My problem is not a loop. The reinstall in place gets stuck at the same point, while "installing devices" in the "Installing Windows Stage". If I try to reinstall it again after booting from the CD, it gets stuck at the same point.
Even when I try rebooting it from the hard drive, it still gets stuck in the same place.

Is there any hope of data retrieval? I can still get into the recovery c onsole, but at this point I don't know how to even start correcting the problem.

You could set the drive up as a slave on another PC and pull data off it before you format.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm a layperson at this, so this may be a dumb question, but if I can't boot my laptop (I can only go into the recovery console), can I still make its hard drive a slave to another system?

Yes you can, I know next to nothing about laptop architecture so am not sure how easy it would be to extract the drive. What I suggested would be easy for a desktop PC owner. Basically you need to whip the drive out of your laptop and set it up on another PC as a slave drive.

But as you seem to be a novice at this sort of thing, you would need help, somebody who knows what they are doing.

Have a look through some of these first, see if anything strikes a bell..........
