I was told that Windows XP (Home Edition) already has the driver for HP Deskjet 870Cse. When I go through the wizard it says that the driver was installed but as soon as I hit "finish" I get the message "Printer was not installed there was in error in installation". I contacted HP and they tried their test driver for XP and it didn't work either. I have also tried to load Microsoft Office for Windows XP and the second disk gives me an error...AND....my scanner won't work. I am so frustrated. A brand new computer and I can't print, scan, or use my microsoft office. Someone please help me (smiling sweetly while banging head on screen)

Tell us more about your computer. Did it come with XP pre-loaded? What is it? AMD or Intel?
How did HP "try" their test driver?

Rather than trying their driver, maybe you can see if XP can use one of its generic drivers for it. You might not get all of the features, but at least it will work. Many of my components are still using microsoft's drivers.

Xp works well with HP. In fact you don't even need that driver that comes with it. You probably need tell us more about your machine like what colins suggested

The computer is a new Sony and came with XP already loaded on it. It's an Intel Pentium 4, 120 GB hard drive.
HP had me load their test driver for XP (Deskjet 550C). They said if that didn't work, then it was a microsoft problem (eyeroll) I just thought it was funny that even my Microsoft office for XP would not even load completely. The scanner is a microtek Scanmaker 3600. I will be forever in your debt if I can get at least the printer going. I would buy a new printer but then I am still not assured that it is going to work with this computer. Thank you all so much for your attenton to this, it's greatly appreciated.

Uninstall software for scanner and printer in "ADD AND REMOVE SOFTWARE", unplug both from your computer, then go into your CONTROL PANEL, go to PRINTERS, then "VIEW PRINTERS & FAX DEVICES", right click and delete all "printers". Restart your computer after XP is done booting plug in your printer (XP has your printer driver) dont use the CD. I think that will work. Before installing your scanner go to their website for any XP updates.

If the suggestion from Nicholas does not work..
With a couple of different things going wrong i.e. the office install and device problems I would suspect a common underlying problem. Try scanning your disk for errors. Also check your event log for errors, it may give a hint as to the root cause.

I tried what Nicolas suggested, however there showed no printers or scanners installed. I'll try scanning my disk for errors. Where is the "event log" located?

You guys are the greatest!

Right Click My computer select Manage. Under system Tools you will see the event viewer. The system log and application logs are what you should look at. Double click the entry to see the details. It is very techy stuff and not every error you see should be cause for concern but you may see a pattern that could help you decide your next course of action.

I upgraded my computer to XP and my new Lexmark X83 printer would not work and I even had the guys at Lexmark help me over the phone. Same problem. Would not recognize printer. Yesterday I saw a fix for it on Microsoft's news web site. Delete all printer software using a file and folder search on your XP system and download a driver for your printer from the manufacturers web site for WINDOWS 2000. Not the XP driver. Re-load your printer software and see what happens. It worked for me and other people, and it might work for you.

Thanks Everyone!

Problem solved. I reloaded the operating system and now everything works fine. It was missing files. I guess when it came to the store it had errors.(shrugging shoulders). The printer now works too.........

Yeah!! Thanks to all of you that tried to help me, I really appreciated your support.

This is to Dave: I am currently doing the same thing now for my X83 (D/Ling the 2000 drivers) I hope it does work for me. I went through the whole idiot on the phone thing with Lexmark twice already. If this does not work, I'll be depressed, I really like this printer and don't want to spend the extra 30% for an HP Printer.

Thanks for the post, you've boosted my confidence in this large d/l (i'm a dial-up victim).

Glad to hear there are people who found a fix.
