Does anyone know if the OS product ID is transferred when one completes an "optional registration" at setup of Windows XP Volume License Key?

no, only when you verify. But if you do not verify, windows will only run for 30 days

So is the completion of an optional registration (alone) anonymous in the sense that Microsoft cannot trace it back to that specific OS?

Sorry but DO NOT ask about problems with either illegal software activation. We can't help you.

I am sorry. This is not a problem, it is simply an inquiry on security protocol so I may complete some research. Have I violated the rules by that?

What has also prompted my topic of this research is the fact that I had purchased a legal copy of Windows XP VLK from a local store. Because it was a VLK version and I accidently completed the optional registration, I want to make sure I have maintained my anonymity.

I was under the impression that VLK meant Corportate license. Corportate license does not have to be registered and will not 'pack up' after 30 days.
I am of the opinion...... There have been various corporate serial numbers released ino the wild and now Microsoft have added a function to service pack one that looks for suspect serial numbers. One such number starts... FCK.... So this sticks in my mind (after having seen various figure-skaters doing their stuff) If you have a serial number FCK or any 0ther banned number, you will not be able to get updates etc.

I am really sorry I mentioned anything close to illegal software, and as I explained above it was not intended to be construed as such. Are they going to report me to my ISP?

You did not ask for an illegal number or code. You did not ask how to hack into copyrighted material. I would assume that your copy of Windows is recorded along with your name if you gave it to them when registering
